Crowns

Dental crowns are caps that are placed over a damaged tooth when a filling cannot fix the problem. They can be made out of a number of materials including ceramics, resins, porcelain, and metals. Other than good oral hygiene, crowns require no special care or maintenance to keep them healthy.

When Are Crowns Needed?

You may require a dental crown fitting where you have a weak tooth that needs protecting or to keep a tooth together that is breaking apart. They are also used for the restoration of worn down or broken teeth, or to cover and support teeth with large fillings where there is very little tooth remaining. At Accu Dental, our expert dental surgeons and orthodontists may use a crown to hold a dental bridge in place or to cover a dental implant.

How Long Do Crowns Last

The crowns fitted by our experts typically last anywhere between five and 15 years. The lifespan of a crown is dependent upon a number of factors, including how good your oral hygiene is, your personal oral habits, and how much wear and tear it is exposed to.

Some of the things that can lessen the lifespan of your crown include using your teeth to open things, biting on your fingernails, chewing hard items, such as ice, and constant clenching and / or grinding of your teeth.
