Removable Retainer

Removable retainers are a brace like application that are used after orthodontic treatment. They hold your newly aligned teeth in position while your bones and gums adjust to the new position in your mouth. Removable retainers are typically made of either clear plastic or rubber and metal wires that cover the outside of your teeth.

How Long?

The length of time you have to wear removable retainers for varies from individual to individual and is very much dependent on the level of treatment required beforehand. Our expert dental surgeons and orthodontists recommend that the minimum amount of time you should wear your removable retainers for is somewhere in the region of about 12 months.

Removing Your Retainers

Your retainers should be worn throughout the whole day and only removed to brush your teeth – your retainers should also be cleaned then as well. They should also be removed when partaking in any sort of physical activity or when playing any sports that require you to wear a helmet – this includes things like cycling, skateboarding, horse riding etc. When doing these things, it’s recommended that you wear a mouthguard to keep your teeth protected.
